NOTE: This watch is STEM WIND AND LEVER SET! Wind the watch by turning the crown, simple. To set the time, you have to FIRST pull out the LEVER, CAREFULLY, between the 4 o’clock and 5 o’clock position (as seen in photo #5), then turn the crown to the desired time. When finished, push the lever back in, VERY CAREFULLY! The trick here is to use your fingernails for pulling the lever out and pushing it back in. This particular lever is a bit tight, it’s over 100 years old! Pull it out with your fingernail and try to feel an endpoint. Pull it out and when it stays pulled out on its own, try the crown. The lever will spring back in if not out far enough. You’ll get the feel. It can be tricky. Pocket watch owners know what I’m talking about here. This is NOT a push/pull crown! DO NOT PULL OUT THE CROWN!
NOTE: Being over 100 years old this lever is a bit tight, like I said. That being said, it is still the KEY(S) to the engine. Sometimes you have make sure it is pushed back in properly and/or pulled out properly. Sometimes the crown will click or be stubborn, while the lever is out. Completely normal. Just start over by pushing the lever back in. You are not breaking the watch. Yet what will break the lever is PULLING TOO HARD OR TOO FAR. You’ll know when you do it! I’ve done it (not to this watch, haha)! Also, when the lever is pulled out, DO NOT turn the crown counter-clockwise! Just turn the crown clockwise another 12 hours around the dial. Too much counter-clockwise is NOT GOOD for these 19th century movements.
NOTE: The only ORIGINAL, from 1883, watchparts of this wristwatch are the DIAL and MOVEMENT, manufactured and signed ELGIN NAT’L WATCH CO. In addition, the dial and the movement are also the only “made in the USA” watchparts. The strap, case, crown, lugs, crystal, and buckle were manufactured in 2017, hence the title MARRIAGE WATCH. This wristwatch was converted from a pocketwatch dating to 1883.
As I write this note, the wristwatch is functioning and working properly.
